Why We Love Vance Birthplace
Vance Birthplace is a state historic site located about fifteen minutes north of downtown Asheville in Weaverville. Of all of the locations where I’ve done weddings near Asheville, Vance Birthplace is my favorite.
When visitors come to Asheville, they think mountains and views of hundreds of miles. While these views really are incredible and breathtaking (if it’s not hazy, which it tends to be in the summer), it’s not the only cultural aspect of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Appalachia, also known as the Backcountry, was settled by frontiersmen who were romanticized for their ruggedness and self-sufficiency. These pioneers settled in areas that were cut off by the rugged terrain from “civilization” in the lowland and coastal neighbors, forcing them to completely live off the land and make due with what they had.
That kind of history still stands at Vance Birthplace, and very few places in Western North Carolina have the variety of possible backdrops for your ceremony and pictures.
Lara and Tom wanted to get married there with their closest family in attendance. They also used their own photographer, something you are completely free to do. The photographer, Jen Yuson, had been working with Lara and Tom over a couple of years as their wedding plans changed, and so they wanted to keep her to capture their elopement. Jen works Charlotte, Greenville, and Asheville, shooting weddings, families, and boudoir, so you should drop her a line!
All of the pictures in this post are copyright Jen Yuson, and she graciously allowed me to use them!
